Mystery donor's $50k gift floors carer mum fighting to save home

Australians have opened their hearts and wallets in an inspiring show of support after an A Current Affair story featuring a devoted Melbourne mum and wife.

Caroline Boileu - who cares full-time for her terminally ill husband Nick - had been set to lose the family home after ANZ's hardship department rebuffed her request to just pay the interest on the mortgage for a period of two years.

Her story, aired on Tuesday, touched many and the bank eventually backed down, offering the 50-year-old a two-year interest-only loan period and a reduced interest rate.

"It was actually better than what I wanted because I asked for a product they offered at 3.18 per cent and this lovely bloke from ANZ has suggested 2.7 per cent. That slashes my repayments by 75 per cent," she told A Current Affair.

But the good news doesn't end there.

Hundreds of viewers donated to a GoFundMe page for the family, raising close to $25,000.

"Humanity's had a massive face-lift in the last forty eight hours," Caroline said.

"There's this whole community that just really, really gives a damn."

In perhaps the most surprising move of all, an anonymous viewer also came forward - offering Caroline and the family a whopping $50,000.

The news nearly caused the Melbourne mum to collapse.

"That's better than good ... that's bloody good!" she said.

Caroline had this message for everyone who donated and offered messages of support: "You're unbelievable. You're beautiful and I'm just blown away. Thank you a million times over."
