Debbie was the worst cyclone to hit the state since Yasi in 2011 when it made landfall as a category four storm in March.
Winds of up to 260 km/h downed trees, stripped buildings and caused wide-spread damage.
The judges of the awards said 9NEWS’ coverage was “absolutely outstanding.”
“This is new benchmark for modern television reporting in a disaster situation.”
