On The Apprentice TV show, Lord Alan Sugar is the rough and gruff boss dishing out entrepreneurial advice laced with expletives. Away from television he is the rough and gruff businessman who created a vast fortune by building an electronics empire. Think Dick Smith with a mean attitude and you're on the right track. But as Sarah Abo discovers, Sugar's Midas touch has not only made him a billionaire, it has also turned him into a British national treasure. And for this cantankerous cockney, that has to be the most surprising achievement of all.
