‘Life is more beautiful’ says woman who tore out eyes while on drugs

A woman who tore her own eyes out while high on drugs says “life is more beautiful” now.

Kaylee Muthart, 20, blinded herself while under the influence of methamphetamine.

She was found holding her eyeballs in her hands while screaming outside a church in South Carolina that she had made a “sacrifice to God”.

One month on and Ms Muthart has spoken of the moment on February 6 when her world “went black”.

“I thought everyone would die if I didn’t tear out my eyes immediately,” she told Cosmopolitan.

“I was hallucinating so my memories are fuzzy.

“I got on my hands and knees, pounding the ground and praying, "Why me? Why do I have to do this?

“So I pushed my thumb, pointer, and middle finger into each eye. I gripped each eyeball, twisted, and pulled until each eye popped out of the socket — it felt like a massive struggle, the hardest thing I ever had to do.”

Ms Muthart was rushed to hospital where doctors performed emergency surgery to remove what was left of her eyes and prevent infection.

Before the incident, she promised her mother, Katy Tompkins, should we attend rehabilitation after months of struggling with drug addiction.

But one week before her scheduled rebab trip, the gory event occurred.

However, Ms Muthart said she was much happier now.

“I'd rather be blind than dependent on drugs,” she said.

“It took losing my sight to get me back on the right path, but from the bottom of my heart, I'm so glad I'm here.”

Mrs Tompkins has set up a GoFundMe page to raise money to get a service dog for her daughter.

“Like so many, she fell victim to the dangerous reality of methamphetamine,” she wrote on the page.

“The journey will no-doubt require many things to allow her to live a full life. But If Kaylee's story can help just one person, something good can come of this tragedy in our family.”
