Wild winds lashing a US east coast resort town has sent beach umbrellas flying like confetti in a remarkable moment caught on camera.

In a YouTube video titled 'Dance of the Umbrellas', storm clouds can be seen rolling across the beach at Ocean City, Maryland on Monday.

As the wind starts to pick up, blue beach umbrellas - positioned in a section of the beach - start to upend themselves and blow away.

A beachgoer holding a closed umbrella is seen running towards one that is blowing away and throws the closed umbrella at it - which does not stop it from flying off.

After he runs to the top of the beach to safety, more and more umbrellas start to upend themselves and blow away.

Eventually, men in yellow shirts - assumed to be lifeguards - start chasing after the umbrellas.

However, they are too late – as most of the umbrellas have been uprooted from the sand and are blowing in a group towards the sand dunes.

Many YouTube users have found the humour in the situation, with only a couple noting the dangerousness of the situation.

"Now thats (sic) what I call Storming the beach," shinchiwarrior wrote.

"Deadlier than sharks!" Allison White said.

However, Andrea Baumann noted the dangerous dilemma the umbrellas posed: "While this is totally hilarious thank goodness no one was hurt!"
