A pair of kayakers has very narrowly escaped disaster after paddling directly into a pod of whales off the coast of Argentina.

In a GoPro video uploaded to YouTube on Sunday by user gisela6652 the row starts off merrily with the couple gasping after spotting the whales dipping in and out of the water.

But instead of avoiding the pod, they paddle directly into it.

They were soon surrounded by the leviathans with one dipping beneath the waves and sliding under the boat lifting it above the water.

"One of the whales came in our direction and lifted the boat twice!" the video's description reads.

"Terrible".

The kayakers stay suspended for a few heart stopping moments, but appear relatively calm and can be heard giggling off camera as the whale retreats and begins moving away with the rest of the pod.

The video was filmed off the coast at Puerto Madryn in Argentina's south.

In just two days the video has attracted more than 50,000 views.

It is not certain when the clip was filmed.
