Rain, thunderstorms to hammer inland Queensland, NSW and Victoria

Inland Queensland, New South Wales, and Victoria are in for rain and thunderstorms today, some of which are forecast to be severe.

The wild weather is the result of a moisture-laden trough currently hovering over central Australia.

Light rain meanwhile is forecast for southern South Australia and Tasmania, as a slow-moving low with associated trough moves over the region.

Onshore winds will also drive showers to southern Western Australia.

A marine wind warning is in place for Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

New South Wales and ACT

Showers/storms, cool-to-mild in the northeast. Showers, cool-to-cold in the southeast. Snow on the Alps.

Showers increasing, cool-to-cold in the southwest. Late shower, cool-to-cold in the northwest.

Partly cloudy in Sydney with a medium chance of showers, most likely in the early morning. Temperatures will range between 11C to 19C.

There's a chance of a thunderstorm from the afternoon. Light winds will become W 15 to 25 km/h in the morning, before turning light in the evening.

Cloudy in Canberra, with a very high chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon.

A low of 6C will rise to a forecasted high of 12C. The chance of a thunderstorm from the afternoon. Light winds.

Victoria

Showers increasing, cold in the southwest. Showers, cold in the southeast. Late shower, cool-to-cold in the northwest. Showers, cool-to-cold in the northeast.

Cloudy in Melbourne, with a low of 8C and a high of 15C. High chance of showers and light winds.

An initial flood watch has been issued for the Snowy, Bemm, Cann and Genoa River.

Queensland

Showers, cool-to-mild in the southeast. Mostly sunny, warm in the northeast. Sunny, cool-to-mild in the northwest. Mostly sunny, cool-to-cold in the southwest.

Cloudy also in Brisbane, with the mercury tipped to drop to a low of 17C and highs of 24C. Very high chance of patchy rain in the morning, with showers and thunderstorms redeveloping in the afternoon. Slight chance of a severe storm with gusty winds. Winds N/NW 15 to 25 km/h turning W 15 to 20 km/h in the early afternoon.

Western Australia

Windy with showers, cool-to-mild in the southwest. Mostly sunny, cool-to-mild in the south. Cloud increasing, mild-to-warm in the northwest. Mostly sunny, very warm-to-hot in the northeast.

Partly cloudy in Perth, with a very high chance of showers, most likely in the afternoon and evening. The chance of a gusty thunderstorm in the late afternoon and evening, with overnight lows of 10C after highs of 21C.

Winds NE 15 to 20 km/h will turn N/NW 25 to 35 km/h in the late morning and early afternoon.

South Australia

Showers, hail, cool-to-cold in southeast and central. Showers, cool-to-cold in the west. Isolated showers, cool-to-cold in north.

Partly cloudy in Adelaide, temperatures ranging from 8C to 16C. A medium chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon.

Light winds becoming W/SW 15 to 25 km/h in the middle of the day, then becoming light in the evening.

Tasmania

Showers/storms, cool in the south. Showers/storms, cool-to-cold in the northwest. Showers, cold in the northeast.

Cloudy in Tasmania with a very high chance of showers, most likely in the morning and afternoon.

Lows of 8C forecast while temperatures are set to rise to a top of 15C. Winds NE 15 to 20 km/h tending NE/SE 15 to 25 km/h in the middle of the day then becoming light in the late evening.

An initial minor flood warning has been issued for the South Esk River. An initial flood watch is in place for the state's North, North East, East Coastal, South East, Derwent and Huon catchments.

Northern Territory

Mostly sunny, warm in the north. Sunny, cool-to-mild over the interior and south.

A chance of morning fog in Darwin, with temperatures ranging between a warm 22C and 31C. Mostly sunny afternoon.

Light winds becoming W/NW 15 to 20 km/h in the early afternoon then becoming light in the evening.
