Police take retirement home gunman into custody

A resident of a retirement complex in the US opened fire in the lobby, killing one person and wounding two, authorities said.

The man, who has not been identified, was taken into custody by police after the shooting in Vancouver, a city in Washington state.

The Smith Tower Apartments is a retirement living home designed for people 62-years of age or older, according to the building's website.

Some residents were evacuated as the situation unfolded, while others sheltered in a safe place.

The suspect was identified as a resident of one of the apartments, police spokeswoman Kim Capp said.

She confirmed one person has died and two people were injured in the shooting.

Officers communicated with the shooter directly and over telephone to get him to surrender peacefully.

The two injured patients are being treated at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Centre.

Their condition was satisfactory, said spokesman Randy Querin.

The investigation is still active, Vancouver Police confirmed on Twitter.
