A US dad wept while thanking his daughter for saving his life by dragging him unconscious from their neighbour’s burning home.

Virginia resident Roger Hough shed tears of joy as he embraced his 22-year-old daughter Ashleigh Williams, who pulled him out of the house and performed CPR until ambulances arrived.

"It’s not every day that a dad is saved by his big girl," an emotional Mr Hough told local TV station WTKR.

The father raced into the flames on Tuesday after his 18-year-old neighbour came running out screaming for help.

Without considering his safety Mr Hough grabbed a fire extinguisher and entered the home, attempting to douse the flames before he was overcome by smoke and collapsed.

"My first instinct was ‘go in low and get him out’," his daughter Ashleigh Williams said.

With the help of her teenage neighbour the pair pulled Mr Hough to the front door, away from the smoke and flames and began performing CPR.

A short time later he woke up gasping for air.

Fortunately for the homeowner Mr Hough managed to put out the fire before he succumbed to the smoke.
