An American woman on a "meth rampage" has haunted a couple's apartment from beneath their bed.

The University District, Seattle couple returned home on Wednesday night to find their possessions strewn across the condo floor.

"It was just trashed," Bridget O'Neill told Vocativ.

The doorknobs had been covered in lotion, a can of paint had been poured over the toilet and Mrs O'Neill's shoes had been separated from their heels.

Police could not find any evidence of theft and satisfied the couple were in no danger, left them to clean up the mess.

Brian O'Neill said that's when the noises started.

"It sounded like a dying possum or raccoon. I had only heard wounded animals make that kind of noise before," he said.

A second search of the apartment by police uncovered the 27-year-old woman in a narrow space underneath the bed, where she had been hiding for two hours in a bout of intense paranoia.

It is reported she climbed a tree and entered the home through a window after a days-long meth rampage.
