An unlucky woman in the US has shown why stilettos are not the most suitable footwear on the rink after face-planting following an NHL finals game.

Hannah Hunsinger, a member of the Los Angeles Kings Ice Crew cheer squad, was celebrating with other fans on the ice at the Staples Centre following the Kings' Stanley Cup win when she came unstuck.

Hunsinger – wearing short shorts and high heels – slipped and fell back awkwardly, slamming her face into the ice.

The moment was made all the more embarrassing by her tumble happened directly behind a live cross to NBC4's Mario Solis.

A fan is seen rushing to Hungsinger's aid before helping her up, where she promptly rubs her knees.

Hunsing told NBC LA she was fine after the incident.

"You would think after skating on the ice, I would be ok with walking on it, but that wasn't the case!" she said.

The LA Kings beat the New York Rangers in double overtime to claim their second Stanley Cup in three years.
