US mum fires assault rifle at intruders

This is the moment a US mother opened fire on three intruders with an assault rifle as they tried to rob her home.

Dramatic surveillance footage shows the teenaged trio trying to kick down the front door of the woman's Detroit home.

But their victim, armed with a rifle, refuses to back down, firing warning shots to scare all but one off.

The remaining boy, armed with a handgun, rushes the door but can be seen leaving just as quickly as he arrived after hearing bullets being fired in his direction.

The woman, who did not wish to be named, told WXYZ Detroit she "didn't have time to get scared" as she rushed to protect her children.

"I let them know I had a gun once they were in the house and they challenged me and said 'no you don't have a gun' so that's when I shot off the first round," she said.

"I wasn't feeling anything at the moment, I got scared afterward."
