US man dissolved in acidic pool at Yellowstone National park

A US man dissolved in a boiling, acidic pool in America's Yellowstone National Park after a failed attempt to soak in what he thought was just a hot spring.

Oregon man Colin Nathaniel Scott, 23, was reportedly reaching down to check the temperature of the pond when he slipped and fell in on June 7, a report released this week said.

"They were specifically moving in that area for a place that they could potentially get into and soak," ranger Lorand Veress told KULR-TV.

"I think they call it 'hot potting'."

His sister was filming a video of Mr Scott at the time, but park officials would not release it to the public and a ranger's description of it was redacted in the report.

When rangers arrived at the geyser, they found his body "floating face-up", but reduced light and the risky conditions meant they delayed the retrieval until the next morning.

But by that time much of Mr Scott's body had dissolved in the churning, acidic spring.

"In a very short order, there was a significant amount of dissolving," Mr Veress said.

Park officials said the water was at boiling point in the hot spring at the time of Mr Scott's death.
