An uncle in the US has been hailed as a hero, after he saved the life of his baby niece by throwing her from the window of a second-floor unit that became engulfed in flames.

"It was so scary… I didn't know what to do," Owen Moore told NBC Philidelphia.

Thick flames were lapping at the floor of Mr Moore's unit blocking his way to safety.

After seeing a family member jump out the second floor window to safety, Mr Moore knew what he had to do.

Without thinking twice, he bundled up his five-month-old niece and dropped her from the smoking second-storey window.

Luckily, she landed safely into the outstretched arms of another family member waiting below.

The baby's mother and Mr Moor's two-year-old daughter were among six family members and a friend who escaped the inferno, which is believed to have been caused by an over-baked pizza.
