Catch of the day: fishermen net two Albino lobsters in same pond within week

Two fishermen may have beaten one in a million odds by catching two Albino lobsters in the same pond within a week of each other.

Lobersterman Bert Philbrick caught a white lobster off Owls Head in the US town of Maine on Friday, less than one week after fellow lobsterman caught one in the same area.

"I was surprised. Shocked, actually," Mr Philbrick told the Press Herald upon discovering the pale crustacean caught in his trap.

But Bob Bayer, the executive director of the University of Maine's Lobster Institute isn't completely sold on the idea that the lobsters are of the Albino kind.

"I don’t think they’re Albinos. It looks like there’s some pigmentation there," Mr Bayer said.

Still, Mr Bayer said, the ghostly-looking pair is unlike anything he's ever seen before.

An easy way to be sure would be to cook the lobsters as the true Albino kind does not turn red in boiling water.

But this case is likely to remain a mystery with both lobsters headed to local aquariums.
