A group of storm chasers in the US were almost blown off the road after running out of petrol while following a mammoth tornado at high speed.

Using a 360 degree camera, veteran storm chaser Reed Timer witnessed the birth of one of the storms.

As dust in the wind spiralled around his vehicle a funnel made its way down from the clouds.

Maintaining a safe distance, Timer and his crew watch as the massive storm pick up farm equipment as the tornado tore across the Midwest landscape wrapped in a cluster of dirt and debris.

"Here it is," Timer can be barely heard saying as fierce wind buffers the camera.

"We’re right alongside it… get a little closer what do you think?

"We’re out of gas... We’re about to run out of gas."

At least 12 tornadoes were reported across the American state of Colorado over the weekend as multiple twisters devastated the City of Wray.

Five people were injured and at least three homes destroyed as tornadoes touched down in Yuma County.

The City of Wray was put into lockdown on Saturday afternoon when ongoing severe tornado watches were upgraded to warnings.

It was at 6pm that the storm's true ferocity was realised when an almost kilometre wide tornado ripped through the city, destroyed property and infrastructure.

Emergency service workers are still estimating the extent of the damage.
