Timeline of the July 15, 2017 fatal shooting of Justine Damond by Minneapolis police officer Mohamed Noor and ensuing events:

2017

July 15

11:27pm - Justine Damond calls 911 to report sounds of distress from a girl or woman behind her house. She says it may be a rape. A dispatcher says officers should arrive soon.

11:35pm - Damond calls again to ask why police haven't arrived. She gives the dispatcher the address again.

11:41pm - Officers Matthew Harrity and Mohamed Noor arrive in the alley behind Damond's house. Harrity, who is driving, is startled by a loud noise near the squad car. Damond approaches the driver's side window immediately afterward and Noor fires his gun past Harrity, striking Damond through that window of the vehicle.

11:42pm - Radio report of one person down, starting CPR.

11:50pm - Radio report of police doing CPR for "last four minutes".

11:51pm - Damond pronounced dead.

July 16

Hundreds gather in Damond's Minneapolis neighbourhood to mourn her death. Mayor Betsy Hodges visits, says she is "heartsick" and "deeply disturbed".

State investigators say the officers involved didn't activate body cameras and squad car video didn't capture the shooting.

July 17

An autopsy shows Damond died of a single gunshot wound to the abdomen. Her fiance Don Damond says the family has been given no information about how the shooting happened.

The officer who shot Justine Damond is identified as Mohamed Noor, a Somali-American with less than two years' experience who became an officer after working in property management. In a statement from his attorney, Noor offers condolences to Damond's family.

July 18

Investigators say Noor declined to be interviewed but his partner, Matthew Harrity, told them he was startled by a loud noise right before Damond approached and Noor shot her through the driver-side window.

July 20

Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau says the shooting should not have happened but defends Noor's training and says the city is reviewing its policy on body cameras and wants them used more often.

July 21

Harteau resigns at Mayor Hodges' request after she says she no longer has confidence in him. Hodges names Assistant Chief Medaria Arradondo to take over who is then shouted down by protesters who say she should resign, too.

August 11

Damond's family holds a public memorial service in Minneapolis.

August 28

Hennepin County Attorney Mike Freeman says he expects to decide on charges by year's end.

September 12

Authorities announce the state Bureau of Criminal Investigation has handed the case over to Freeman's office.

November 18

City council member Jacob Frey defeats Hodges in the mayor's race. Much of the campaign focused on police-community relations.

December 13

Freeman is caught on video saying he doesn't have enough evidence to charge Noor and blaming investigators "who haven't done their job."

December 28

Freeman says he'll miss his self-imposed deadline of deciding on charges by year's end because he needs more time.

2018

January 24

Attorneys reveal Freeman convened a grand jury and subpoenaed other officers to compel them to tell what they know. Freeman says he still intends to make his own decision on charges.

March 20

Noor turns himself in to the Hennepin County Jail on charges of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter

March 21

Noor makes first appearance in court. Bail is reduced from US$500,000 to US$400,000.

July 15

Family and friends gather at Sydney's Freshwater Beach, near Manly, at sunrise to mark one year since Justine's death.

July 23

Justine's family files a $US50 million civil ($67m) lawsuit in the US naming Noor, Officer Harrity, the city of Minneapolis and its former and current police chiefs.

December 7

Minneapolis prosecutors lay an additional charge of intentional or second-degree murder.

2019

March 1

Noor formally pleads not guilty to the murder and manslaughter of Justine Ruszczyk Damond.

April 9

Noor's trial begins and the jury hears evidence he feared he and his partner were going to be ambushed.

April 10

Justine's family weep in court as they listen to the Australian life coach's haunting 911 calls and se crime scene photos of her body partially covered by a white sheet.

April 25

Noor testifies, telling the court his training taught him reacting too late "means ... you die" and so when he saw a woman in a pink shirt with blonde hair at his partner's window, raising her right arm, he fired "to stop the threat".

April 29

Jury retires to consider its verdict.

April 30

Noor found guilty of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter but not guilty of second-degree murder.
