A US service station worker was spared a potentially violent robbery when the would-be bandit recognised the clerk and decided not to rob the store.

The hooded suspect walked in to the Quick Save in Wheat Ridge, Colorado on Wednesday but stopped in his tracks moments after entering.

Footage shows the man with his face covered look at the cashier and throw his arm down towards the ground.

"I was going to rob this place, but I know you," police said the suspect told the clerk.

The would-be robber then asked the worker "Do you know me?" To which the cashier replied no.

"Good" the suspect said and walked out of the store while giving his buddy the thumbs up.

A 7-Eleven store was robbed a short time later, police said.

Witnesses said the store was robbed by a man matching the Quick Save suspect's description.
