A US schooolteacher was shocked to discover Satanic symbols drawn with caramel syrup on the top of her coffees after buying the two drinks at a Louisiana Starbucks.

Megan Pinion took to Facebook to complain after she purchased the beverages from the Starbucks in the Mall of America in Baton Rouge on Sunday, reports the Advertiser.

One of the coffees was decorated with a star or pentagram — which was "almost okay because it is in your Starbucks logo", Ms Pinion wrote — but the other was adorned with a 666 that she found "quite offensive".

Pinion said she "was so appalled" by the patterns that she couldn't bring herself to look at the young man who had served her the coffees.

"I am in no way judging his beliefs or dis-meriting (sic) his beautiful artwork," her post said.

"I am however judging his lack of professionalism and respect for others."

Pinion complained that, as a public school teacher, she "could be sued in a heartbeat" if she were to present her students with art projects about her own Catholic faith.

"Fortunately I have enough common sense to present myself with professionalism and follow an ethics code," she said.

"Perhaps that could be suggested to that particular (Starbucks) location."

Starbucks social media team spokesman Tom Kuhn told the Advertiser that the coffee giant reached out to Ms Pinion via social media to apologise for the symbols.

He was not sure which Starbucks employee had served Ms Pinion.

"This obviously is not the type of experience we want to provide any of our customers," Kuhn said in a statement.

He could not say whether the incident might change Starbucks' policy on coffee foam art.
