Raccoon misses safety net but survives fall

Emergency crews in the US watched in horror as a raccoon precariously perched on the side of an apartment building evaded their grasp and plummeted to the ground, missing a safety net.

Crowds gathered around the building in Kalamazoo, Michigan on Tuesday and waited anxiously for an hour as firefighters in a cherry picker tried to lasso the tiny mammal to bring it down safely, Fox44 reports.

The emergency workers appeared to be on the verge of success as they grabbed hold of the weary raccoon with a rope attached to a pole, only to see it fall short of the cherry picker and plunge to the ground, missing a waiting safety net.

Despite falling a number of storeys the animal appeared relatively unharmed.

It was then taken to a rehabilitation facility, where it is expected to recover.
