Girlfriend left in tears as proposal ends in disaster

A would-be US fiancée went from overjoyed to distraught in less than a second as she watched the engagement ring her boyfriend had just given her sink to the bottom of a lake after slapping it out of his hand in disbelief.

The man only identified as Shane popped the question while on a paddle boat with his girlfriend and a group of their friends and posted footage of the incident online yesterday.

The video starts with the group slowly paddling on the lake when Shane points to four people on the shore holding a sign that presumably says something along the lines of 'Will you marry me?'

When the camera pans back to the couple Shane is holding up a ring between his thumb and index finger.

In the emotion of the moment his excited girlfriend playfully hits him, inadvertently knocking the ring out of his hand and into the water.

As Shane desperately slides into the water while repeating "Oh my God!" his girlfriend covers her mouth in shock before starting to sob.

It is not known if the proposal was accepted or if the ring was ever found.

Little is else is known about the unverified video, which could be an elaborately staged stunt.

Attempts to contact Shane have so far been unsuccessful.
