A US prisoner will spend the rest of his life behind bars after murdering a fellow inmate over a piece of chocolate.

William Alexander Brooks, 22, admitting to killing Kenneth Robert Grochowski, 57, in 2012 while they shared a cell at the Clayton County Jail in Iowa.

Grochowski had purchased a packet of Reese's peanut butter cups, which contain two chocolates, in the commissary and gave one to Brooks.

But Brooks was not satisfied and demanded his cellmate hand over both chocolates.

When the older man refused, Brooks admits he lost his temper and began punching Grochowski to the throat before slamming his head into a wall, kicking him in the ribs and finally banging his head into the cell's toilet bowl.

When asked why he launched the deadly attack on his cell-mate, Brooks replied: "I killed him because he p---ed me off".

Brooks will now spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole.
