A student who tried to stop a fellow student from opening fire at a US high school has been shot dead and at least three others have been injured.

Spokane County Sheriff Ozzie Knezovich says the shooter arrived at Freeman High School in Rockford in the state of Washington on Wednesday with two weapons, but one of them jammed when he tried to fire it.

A student tried to block the shooter but he was shot and killed before the gunman continued shooting three other people before a staff member stopped him, Knezovich said.

Knezovich said no police officers fired their weapons and the gunman - who is now being held in a juvenile jail - was disabled by the time officers arrived.

A 15-year-old student at the school told The Associated Press the gunman was one of his classmates and had long been obsessed with school shootings. He said the student had brought notes to school at the beginning of the year saying he might be killed or jailed.
