US President Barack Obama and his wife Michelle have stood on the White House lawn to observe a minute's silence to mark the 14th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.

The moment of silence was observed at 8.46am local time on Friday - the time when the first jet smashed into the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York, where a ceremony of remembrance also took place.

Bells tolled in New York and families of the victims of the 2001 and 1993 World Trade Center attacks began reading the names at ground zero.
