Nuclear material casually transported through US suburbs

An outraged US man has filmed a massive convoy carrying thousands of litres of nuclear material travelling down his quiet residential street.

Robert Fullone posted video of the incident on October 26 showing an entourage of safety vehicles and trucks travelling from the West Valley nuclear power plant in Utah.

Fullone can be heard off camera saying the truck, towing more than 135,000 litres of hazardous nuclear material, was stopped over concerns it could not safely manoeuvre across a small dip in the road.

The lack of police monitoring the trucks is a stark contrast to the precautionary measures Australia puts in place when transporting nuclear material.

In December 2015, police and border official set up large exclusion zone around Wollongong’s Port Kembla to facilitate the arrival of a cargo ship carrying a stockpile of hazardous waste.

Roads were then closed and police strictly monitored the waste’s movements from the port.
