New York man drowns after retrieving dog who fell through ice pond

A New York man has drowned while trying to save his dog from a frozen pond.

Garvin Brown, 34, from Brooklyn was reportedly walking his dog around 1am on Sunday morning (3pm AEDT) when his dog ran onto the ice surface of a pond and fell into the water, reports the Associated Press.

He and his fiancé were renting a home in Naples in upstate New York.

Officials from the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office said the man broke through the ice to retrieve his canine, however was unable to get himself out and drowned.

The dog survived.
