Naked man causes six-car pile-up, multiple injuries during sprint down freeway

Police say a man who caused a six-car pile-up on a US freeway then attempted to flee the scene stark naked seemed "unusually strong" during his violent arrest.

Tracy Martin, 44, flipped his pickup truck on interstate 71, near Blue Ash, Ohio, after clipping four vehicles at speed, rear-ending another and then smashing into a sixth vehicle after the ute rolled.

Martin, who hails, aptly enough, from Chagrin Falls, then ran more than 1.5kms down the freeway completely nude.

No items of clothing were found in his car, and passing drivers reportedly offered the 44-year-old clothes as he legged it down the road.

Many were concerned that he would be hurt, state troopers said.

"He has no shoes on, he is completely naked. People were offering him shirts out the window," one driver told emergency services on the phone.

"He was ignoring them."

"I'm very concerned, he's obviously impaired," said another 911 caller.

"There's something wrong. We don't know why he's doing what he's doing."

Police say that when they caught up with Martin, he withstood four billy-club blows and seemed "unusually strong".

"He had his hands in the air and was yelling explicit language," Ohio state trooper Kyle Doebrich said.

"He seemed very irate."

Two of the six people injured in the incident, which happened overnight, were airlifted to the University of Cincinnati Medical Centre, while they other four were taken to a medical facility at Bethesda.

Toxicology results on Martin's blood are potentially weeks away.
