Mother's desperate 911 call from sinkhole

A harrowing 911 call captures the moment a US mother thought she and her son would die after their car was swallowed by a sinkhole.

Juanita Pineda's car plummeted into a three-metre wide sinkhole stretching the width of a rural road west of Chicago at 3.50am Tuesday, as the mother and son delivered newspapers.

Benjamin Hernandez, 15, who was in the back seat at the time of the crash, could be heard crying as Ms Pineda made the desperate call for help.

"I can't move my head, mum," he cries out.

"Don't move, don't move. They’re coming, papi, hold on," the 41-year-old replies.

But seconds later, the situation becomes more dire as an unsuspecting motorist drives his ute directly on top of the wreckage.

"Oh my god, no! Another car!" Ms Pineda screams, before pleading with the 25-year-old driver for help.

Rescue crews responding to the scene had to cut the pair free from the crushed sedan.

Benjamin suffered a fractured spine, ribs, nose and jaw, while his mother escaped with only minor bruising.

He remains in a stable condition in hospital.

Local authorities blamed the sinkhole on heavy rainfall that fell on the area Monday night.
