A 190m-long ship has dramatically run aground in the US after a mechanical failure rendered it unable to stop.

The Liberian bulk carrier 'Agia Irini' ran aground near the Burlington Bristol Bridge that connects New Jersey with Pennsylvania overnight, Philadelphia's WPVI TV station reports.

A video shot by an eyewitness shows the enormous vessel tearing up the sand on the floor of the Delaware River as it is powerless to stop.

The ship came to a halt just metres short of the shore in Burlington City.

No one on the ship was injured.

The 'Agia Irini' reportedly ran aground after losing propulsion with the exact cause of the incident under investigation.

Witnesses said tugboats took around 20 minutes to pull the ship out, point it in the right direction and send it downriver.
