A man in the US shot himself in the chin while changing on Sunday when the gun he was carrying in his pants pocket went off, according to the Carter County Sheriff's Department.

Sheriff Deputy David Caldwell arrived at the house of William Rood in the US state of Tennessee around 6.40pm to find the man bleeding from the nose and mouth, Johnson City Press reports.

The sheriff said Mr Rood was carrying a .25 calibre Barretta pistol in the front pocket of his pants.

The weapon fired when Rood placed them on dresser with the gun still in the pocket, the bullet hitting him in the chin.

Johnson was then taken to Johnson City Medical Centre.
