A man and a tiger walk into a bar.

No, this isn't the start of a bad joke but rather the beginning of a police report filed in Chicago after a man took his Siberian tiger, Sher Khan, out for a tipple.

John Basil, who runs the Big Run Wolf Ranch – a rescue and educational ranch in Lockwood - decided to take the five-month old cub along while he enjoyed a drink at a local bar on February 14.

"I don't know if I had permission," Mr Basil told Fox News. "I brought him in the backdoor and he stayed for 15 minutes."

But it turns out that Sher Khan isn't much of a people person, and soon became restless.

"The music was too loud, there were too many people and too many distractions," Mr Basil said.

"He started getting a little cranky, so I took him out."

Witnesses said they found the sight of Sher Khan mingling with locals a little "disconcerting".

But Mr Basil says at no time was anyone in the bar in danger: "We had two handlers there that are trained by me, so they know what to do. It's not like we walked in there and turned him loose".

Mr Basil said he took the tiger to the bar to promote 'Wild Fest' an educational event he is involved in.

Police, however, weren't satisfied with his interactive lesson and have charged Mr Basil with three misdemeanors including disorderly conduct.
