Lesbian suing sperm bank for 'providing black man's semen'

A white lesbian couple in the US are suing a sperm bank that they claim provided them with a black man's semen and caused them to give birth to a mixed-race daughter.

Jennifer Cramblett said Chicago's Midwest Sperm Bank sent her six vials of a black man's sperm after she and her partner Amanda Zinkon requested a white donor, the Chicago Tribune reports.

In her lawsuit Ms Cramblett, 36, says that she lives in a small all-white town in Ohio and her family are racist.

She claims the sperm bank sent her a note apologising for the mix-up and a refund for the vials of semen that cost $400 each.

But Ms Cramblett believes the compensation doesn't go far enough and she is worried her now two-year-old daughter Payton will be the only black child in her school and has considered moving to a more ethnically diverse community.

"Jennifer lives each day with fears, anxieties and uncertainty about her future and Payton's future," the lawsuit states.

"Payton has hair typical of an African American girl. To get a decent cut, Jennifer must travel to a black neighbourhood, far from where she lives, where she is obviously different in appearance, and not overtly welcome."

Ms Cramblett is suing for breach of warranty and wrongful birth.

Midwest Sperm Bank has declined to comment.
