A motorist has threatened to "pull Trump on you" in a bizarre and homophobic rant directed at a cyclist he had clipped while driving in California.

An unnamed cyclist was riding in a share lane, which cars can drive in if no bicycles are present, when his elbow was clipped by a driver identified as Robert Lewis.

The Wednesday morning collision led to a fiery confrontation which was filmed and uploaded to YouTube by a friend of the cyclist.

"What are you gonna do? Put it on tape? A surfer against a queer?" Lewis shouts in the face of his victim.

"My name is your worst enemy, motherf-----.

"If there wasn't any witnesses, you know what I'd do to you? I'd pull Trump on you."

There's no word on what using the Republican presidential nominee's name as a verb means in this context.

Lewis told CBS2 he was "very embarrassed" by his anger.

"I'm just an old surfer, knucklehead, and I do apologise for using the words that I used," he said on Thursday.

Newport Beach Police are investigating the confrontation.
