A US man may face charges over a car crash that killed his bride on their wedding day.

Georgia couple Ryan Patrick Quinton and Kali Shay Dobson were leaving their wedding reception just hours after they were married on Sunday when tragedy struck, ABC News reported.

The couple's Pontiac Firebird veered off the road with Quinton behind the wheel.

Dobson, 25, was thrown from the vehicle and killed.

A dazed Quinton, 27, stumbled from the wreckage and flagged down a passing motorist.

"His shirt was all torn up and he was bleeding," Chris Thomas, who discovered Quinton, said.

"He had blood all over his face and blood coming out of his hands and stuff just looked bad … it scared me to death."

Quinton, who remains in hospital recovering from his injuries, told police he had swerved to avoid a dog when he lost control of the vehicle.

He could be hit with criminal charges if he is found to have been driving under the influence.

"Charges are pending the completion of the Georgia State Patrol's Specialized Collision Reconstruction Team investigation," Franka Young of the Georgia Department of Public Safety told ABC News in an emailed statement.
