Goldie Hawn gets dirty with Amy Schumer

There they are, Goldie Hawn and Amy Schumer sitting in a bungalow on the manicured grounds of a seaside Santa Monica hotel to talk about their new comedy Snatched.

Hawn, of course, remains one of America's sweethearts.

The 71-year-old grandmother is beloved for roles including Private Benjamin, Bird on a Wire and The First Wives Club.

Next to her is Schumer, the rogue, foul-mouthed 35-year-old stand-up comedienne and movie star willing to do, say and poke fun at any topic - no matter how sensitive - for a laugh.

"What are we going to do about Amy because her mouth is a potty mouth?" I ask Hawn, hoping she will assist me in an intervention in the bungalow to clean up Schumer's act.

Hawn's response is a surprise.

"Amy does not have a potty mouth," Hawn defiantly says.

I'm shocked.

I had just watched a stand-up performance where Schumer walks on stage and one of the first things she tells the crowd is her mother is a ... really bad word that starts with "c".

"It is how you listen to Amy," Hawn explains.

"It's you that has to make that decision."

I'm confused, particularly because in the opening minutes of the interview Schumer is polite, looks angelic and is yet to crack a genital or bodily fluid joke.

Hawn is also surprised, but with how quickly she jumped to Schumer's defence.

"This is really interesting," Hawn says.

"I'm having a mother moment."

Schumer, still looking angelic, is ecstatic about how Private Benjamin just jumped to her defence

"Don't mess with my mum!" Schumer tells me.

I find Schumer's "mum" description interesting because I hear they did become close while shooting Snatched.

"So it has become legal?" I ask Hawn.

"You have actually adopted Amy?"

Hawn already has three children: Kate; Oliver; and Wyatt.

"Not yet," Hawn, a little cautious, says.

Schumer is all in on being adopted and shacking up with Hawn and longtime partner Kurt Russell.

"I'm drawing up the papers as we speak," Schumer says.

It's time to switch topics and the first thing that comes into my head is there is a bartender just outside their bungalow giving away free beer and margaritas.

It's only 11am.

"I didn't know they were giving away beer," Schumer, quickly forgetting about the adoption papers, says.

Mission accomplished.

Hawn has not starred in a film since The Banger Sisters 15 years ago so the obvious next question is why did Snatched break her acting drought?

"She gave me $200," Hawn blurts out.

"I gave her $200 on the spot and then I blackmailed her," Schumer confirms.

I'm stunned.

Hawn is looking at me with those big blue eyes pleased with herself for receiving $200 from Schumer.

I break it to Hawn she was ripped off.

"Was it American dollars?" I ask.

Schumer, sensing things could go wobbly, cuts in.

"It was euros," she says, hoping that makes the deal seem better.

Hawn says it was the significant co-starring role alongside Schumer that seduced her out of retirement.

Scripts that usually come her way are for "mother" roles on the fringe of the story.

In Snatched Schumer plays Emily Middleton, a tragic dreamer stuck with two non-refundable airfares for a holiday in Ecuador after her boyfriend dumps her.

Hawn plays Middleton's mother, Linda, who lives a quiet life in the suburbs and reluctantly agrees to go on what becomes a disastrous trip.

Hawn didn't mind getting down and dirty with Schumer.

I counted two jokes in the movie involving semen - one about whale semen - Hawn delivered.

Schumer again jumps in to make it clear Hawn was not Mrs Innocent and developed the semen jokes with her.

"It was funny so yeah, let's do it," Hawn says was her response.

It is time for the interview to end so I ask Schumer and Hawn if they are OK with it ending on that topic.

"We'll end on whale semen. Is that fair?" I ask.

"I would say yeah," Hawn smiles.

America's favourite grandmother surprisingly is happy to talk about any bodily fluids.

"Well, whatever a whale puts out," Hawn says.

"It could be one of many things."
