A wild bear that achieved worldwide fame after being filmed walking on its hind legs like a human down a quiet street in New Jersey has been reportedly killed by a hunter.

A Facebook page dedicated to "Pedals the injured bipedal bear" reported the black bear was shot with a bow-and-arrow by a hunter on Monday.

"The hunter who has wanted him dead for nearly 3 years had the satisfaction of putting an arrow through him, bragging at the station," a Facebook post written earlier today read.

"Pedals is at peace now because his beautiful soul left his body when he was killed."

The Facebook page was scathing of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) and the Fish and Wildlife Department for not getting the upright bear to a sanctuary.

The NJDEP said it could not confirm the death of Pedals because it had not been tagged or had a DNA sample taken.

Pedals has been a well-known identity in New Jersey since it was first spotted in 2014.

It is believed the bear had an unusual walking style because it was missing part of its front right leg and had an injured front left paw.
