Facebook pays $222k for cop to patrol truancy

Facebook is paying US$200,000 ($222,700) a year to fund community police officer that will not patrol their headquarters or work with other officers in the local area.

In a bid to make a contribution to the community it is based in the social network will pay the City of Menlo Park, California, where it has its head office to hire an additional police officer.

The tech firm has agreed to pay at least $600,000 to fund the scheme for three years, with an option of lengthening the scheme.

The newly hired officer will not respond to emergency calls or patrol Facebook HQ, which already has its own security guards.

Instead the lucky candidate will "handle the neighbourhood issues such as truancy, school and business safety and overall neighbourhood security," according to Council notes.

While it is unclear how much the officer will take home the budget is US$200,000 annually which, in tough economic times, is good money for chasing wagging school kids.
