Edward Hopper's Chop Suey fetches $A127.1m

Edward Hopper's Chop Suey, a 1929 masterpiece, has sold for a record $US91.8 million ($A127.1 million) at a Christie's auction in New York.

According to Christie's, the sale of the first half of the Barney A Ebsworth collection, titled An American Place, reached total sales of $US317.801 million.

Chop Suey, the most famous Hopper painting left in private hands, was a record for the artist as well as for pre-war American art.

Willem de Kooning's Woman as Landscape also made a new sales record for the artist, selling for $US68.9 million, while Jackson Pollock's Composition with Red Strokes was sold for $US55.4 million.

According to the Christie's, the Ebsworth family said the auction was homage to Barney Ebsworth's eye as a collector.
