A teenager has watched US$100,000 slip through his fingers after losing a game of Jeopardy by a single dollar to his grinning opponent.

Alec Fischthal thought the game was in the bag after betting his $15,655 prize money from the day before to post an impressive overall total.

His ambitious gamble fell shy after his competitor seemed to foresee the final score and increased his own gamble by one dollar.

Sharath Narayan made an odd-numbered bet that seemed bizarre at first.

But when all the numbers were tallied it was obvious, the young man is some sort of genius who was toying with his rivals.

Fischthal threw his hands up in defeat after losing the $134,958 kitty.

“What a finish,” host Alex Trebek said.

“The best one in a long, long time.”

The runner-up wasn't too disappointed though after finding out he would still be taking home $67,479.
