When you're listening to the traffic report on the radio, you are hoping to avoid being delayed by an accident.

But a US driver tuning in only managed a major accident and his likely death by mere inches when a massive dump truck tipped over in front of him.

As the unnamed driver was crossing the Tappan Zee Bridge in the New York suburbs during rush hour yesterday morning, the truck beside him started to tilt over.

The driver managed to slow down just fast enough to avoid contact with the truck before it toppled over entirely.

The truck dumped its load of scrap metal all over the bridge, shutting down traffic for hours.

Remarkably the truck driver was unharmed.

State Police are now investigating the cause of the accident.

Spanning the Hudson River at its widest point, the Tappan Zee Bridge was completed in 1955, though its replacement is under construction.
