A US student who claims he had sex with his high school's counsellor insists he has done nothing wrong because he is an adult and can make his own decisions.

"In the heat of the moment, nothing really was wrong. At the end of the day, I'm 18 and I'm an adult and I make my own decisions," the unidentified teenager told KHOU in an off-camera interview.

Texas counsellor Ellen Wermeling, 32, has been fired by the Aldine Independent School District and appeared in court in Friday on a charge of having an improper relationship with a student.

She is currently free on a $10,800 bond.

The tryst is alleged to have occurred on February 28 when the teen messaged his teacher on Instagram saying he was bored.

The counsellor, who was helping the student apply to colleges, allegedly invited him to her home, where the 18-year-old said the couple had sex.

The student denied he and Wermeling had sex at her home on two other occasions last month.

He later confessed to his school football coach who alerted the principal.

Wermeling has denied the allegations and deleted her Instagram account but police say they have screengrabs of her exchange with the student.

Wermeling will appear in court again next month.
