A woman whose mother abandoned her in a Burger King as a baby says it was "a pure shock" to finally be reunited with her long-lost parent after 27 years.

Katheryn Deprill, 27, was dubbed the "Burger King Baby" after she was left in the toilet of a Pennsylvania fast-food outlet hours after her birth in September 1986.

Her story went viral in March after she posted a photograph of herself to Facebook holding a sign asking for information about her birth mother.

Deprill's strategy worked: she finally met with her mother at an attorney's office in Allentown on Monday.

"It was pure shock to see it was actually her standing there," Deprill told Morning Call.

"The first thing I got was my hug that I wanted."

Deprill, who described her birth mother as "very normal" and "very sweet", said she "never in a million years" thought her Facebook plea would succeed.

"I have literally not wiped the smile off my face," she said. "It's definitely the best scenario possible."

Deprill's birth mother, who does not wish to be identified, was finally able to explain why she abandoned her newborn daughter.

The mother said she was raped by a stranger while holidaying in a foreign country with her family, and hid her pregnancy because she was "embarrassed and ashamed", according to her attorney John Waldron.

She gave birth in her bedroom and drove the baby to Burger King, knowing someone would find her daughter.

The mother approached Waldron for advice on how to handle the situation on March 13, as her daughter's story was making global headlines.

Waldron arranged the "emotional and dramatic" meeting at his office.

"Everyone hugged. It brought tears to your eyes," Waldron said.

Deprill was accompanied by her adoptive mother and the youngest of her three sons, seven-month-old Jackson.

Her birth mother was accompanied by her husband.
