An impoverished Californian man who barely has enough money to eat has turned in a bag he found carrying more than $130,000 in cash.

Joe Cornell found the orange bag in the middle of a street in downtown Fresno while volunteering for the Salvation Army, Fox26 reports.

Mr Cornell said he was watering plants when he saw an armoured car at a nearby street corner.

"A car pulled up saying that the 'Brinks' driver dropped something but the armoured car kept going," Mr Cornell said.

He went to the orange bag and opened it up, revealing US$125,000 ($134,000) in cash.

"I thought 'What type of man do I want to my grandkids to think I am?'," Cornell said.

"I want them to think I'm a just man that does the right thing and I did the right thing."

Mr Cornell called the police who interviewed him over the bag, with one officer telling him he was one-in-a-million who would have returned the bag.

Fox26 News tried contacting Brinks to see if they would offer a reward or thank Mr Cornell but they have not returned emails.
