In the incident, he suffered stab wounds to his back and chest.

He was taken to hospital and is recovering.

The incident is believed to have taken place at about 2am Monday local time (about 4pm Monday AEST), on Eighth Avenue in Midtown.

US outlet CBS News, quoting police sources, said a 25-year-old Florida man had been arrested and charged with assault.

The same sources told CBS the pair exchanged words but said the alleged attack appeared largely unprovoked.
