CNN anchor Anderson Cooper has apologised for an “unprofessional” comment he made about a Trump supporter during a live interview last night.

Political commentator Jeffrey Lord was defending US President Donald Trump when Cooper interrupted and claimed Mr Lord would still defend the man even if he defecated on his desk.

“I don’t care what he says to the Russians,” Mr Lord said, referencing recent claims Mr Trump had called late FBI chief James Comey a “nut job” in front of Russian representatives.

“I mean he’s the president of the United States.

“If he wants to say that, Barack Obama wants to say whatever, if George Bush says I looked in his eyes-”

Cooper then interjects.

“If he took a dump on his desk you would defend him,” he remarks, to the laughter of someone off screen.

“I mean, I don't know what he would do that you would not defend.

“I mean, you're a loyal guy, I think that speaks well of you."

Cooper’s comments quickly spread across social media.

He has since tweeted an apology, acknowledging his behaviour was “unprofessional”.

Earlier this month, video of Cooper rolling his eyes at Trump counsellor Kellyanne Conway went viral.

The reaction was prompted by a seemingly irrelevant aside made by Conway during an interview regarding Mr Trump’s decision to fire FBI director Jacob Comey.
