The man famously acquitted over the shooting death of unarmed African American teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012 has suffered facial injuries in another shooting.

George Zimmerman was reportedly injured after he was “sprayed with glass” when a bullet pierced a car window at an intersection in Lake Mary, Florida, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Local police said the other person identified in the incident was known to Zimmerman and the pair had previously had an altercation.

“I don’t believe he had a direct hit with a bullet,” Zimmerman’s lawyer Don West said.

The fatal shooting of Martin by neighbourhood watch volunteer Zimmerman in February 2012 sparked outrage in the United States.

Rallies, marches and protests were held across the country and debate around gun laws and the right to bear arms laws ensued.

The protests erupted again in mid-2013 after a Florida court found Zimmerman had not deliberately violated Martin’s civil rights and he was acquitted of second-degree murder.
