A 72-year-old man has been charged with scratching several cars parked in a US town’s library parking lot.

Gary Young, 72, has been charged with malicious destruction of property over $1,000, but less than $20,000 over the incident in Clinton Township, Michigan.

“This behaviour is very troubling,” Smith said.

“Libraries, schools, parks are all community environments we want our citizens to visit and feel safe doing so. You would never think, while checking out a book, a senior citizen, with no apparent motive, is maliciously damaging your vehicle in the parking lot.”

Police allege Young parked near vehicles in the parking lot between March 22 and May 13, then get out of his car in a suspicious manner and scratched the exterior of other people’s cars on multiple occasions.

He would then allegedly return to his vehicle and drive away.

Smith said that Young would be held accountable for his malicious behaviour.

The accused man was brought before a Clinton Township court yesterday and issued a AUD$7300 bond.
