UK mum makes cochlear implants cool with superhero stickers

A UK mother has made cochlear implants cool with specially-designed superhero decorations.

Sarah Ivermee's son Freddie was diagnosed with profound deafness when he was three months old and was fitted with cochlear implants which are surgically-implanted hearing devices that sit over the ear.

Ms Ivermee was inspired to make hearing devices fun after hearing a friend describe how her daughter didn’t like wearing them because they made her feel different from her friends.

She started simply using nail stickers but soon developed the idea into a business called My Lugs.

"I thought there would be a lot of families struggling with children who don’t want to wear their [hearing devices], and I felt I had to help," she told The Mighty.

Current styles include Angry Birds, Batman and Hello Kitty among others.

"I get emails from professionals to thank me for what I’m doing; it just amazes me," Ms Ivermee said.

"People all over the world are wearing the little kits that I make in my living room; it's unbelievable."
