Umbrella hero fends off meat cleaver attack

A hero stranger armed only with an umbrella has saved a man from a violent meat cleaver attack in an Italian city.

In a pedestrian underpass at Milan's central station, security officers watched in horror as surveillance cameras showed a man involved in an apparent brawl take out a meat cleaver and start swinging it wildly at his victim.

But as he swings the huge blade and while guards are rushing to the scene, an unnamed stranger comes to the victim's rescue.

Using only his umbrella, the unknown man tries to fend off the attacker, who continues leaping forward to slice at his target.

The brave man keeps the meat cleaver assailant at bay until a group of police swarm and arrest him.

Algerian man Abdel Farth, 31, has been charged in relation to the incident, although police are yet to determine the motive for the attack.

It is suspected the attack was a "simple drunken brawl that got out of hand".
