UK faces ‘Marmageddon’ as Brexit backlash causes Marmite shortage

Popular yeast spread Marmite has temporarily halted sales in the United Kingdom over a price increase dispute.
UK supermarket giant Tesco stopped sales of the Vegemite-style spread on its online website overnight to protest a price rise of products from manufacturers, BBC News reported.
Marmite producer Unilever confirmed it would increase prices to combat the sudden decrease of the British pound’s value as a result of Brexit.
Jars of the spread remain “unavailable” for purchase online, despite the Unilever confirming they had “successfully resolved” the supply issue with Tesco.
"We have been working together closely to reach this resolution and ensure our much-loved brands are once again fully available,” Unilever said in a statement.
Many Marmite-lovers took to social media to express their temporary panic about the spread’s plummeting availability.
One Twitter user joked that Kumbuka the Gorilla, who momentarily escaped London Zoo yesterday afteroon, was just trying to “stock up” on the iconic yeast spread.
Both Unilever and Tesco have suffered significant market price decreases since the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union.
Unilever shares have dropped 2.5 percent while Tesco shares have fallen 4.5 percent, according to Google Finance.
Marmite was launched into the homes of Britons in 1902, and sells an average of 50 million jars annually.
